On May 4, 2023, WLC co-founding member Bob Thomas attended the White-Collar Crime Conference presented by the Boston Bar Association.  The event brought together an esteemed group of lawyers, defense counsel, prosecutors, in-house counsel, judges, and corporate professionals. They shared their expertise on various issues in government investigations and prosecutions of a wide variety of corporate crime. The conference featured panel discussions, analysis, and guidance on the latest white-collar crime cases and practice developments.

The topics on the agenda included:

1) Economic Crime and Cybercrime;

2) Healthcare Fraud;

3) The Corporate Credit Carrot: What does it mean to cooperate under DOJ’s updated regime;

4) DOJ’s New FCPA: Sanctions and Export Control Enforcement;

5) Ransomware: What You Need to Know; and

6) Tools of the Trade – The Government’s Increasing Use of RICO, Cooperators, and Wiretaps in White-Collar Cases.

The conference ended with “Views from the Courtroom,” which was presented by First Assistant United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy,  the Honorable Allison D. Burroughs, and other Boston practitioners. This group discussed their views on the recent white-collar crime cases, including the challenges faced by judges in sentencing white-collar criminals.

Overall, the White-Collar Crime Conference was highly informative and provided many useful insights. The conference provided an excellent opportunity for the attendees to network with each other and learn from the best in the business.  As always, the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts and the Office of the Attorney General for the Commonwealth were well-represented among the speakers and attendees.

What an impressive group of lawyers this was.  The Boston bar has such a deep level of expertise in all things related to white collar crime, from health care fraud and abuse, to cyber-crime, to management of robust compliance systems.  It’s fun and professionally fulfilling to be connected to such a talented group of people.
